Maureen O'Hara
Maureen FitzSimons, born 17 August 1920 and died on the 24th of October, 2015) was an Irish actress from Ireland. She was a popular actress in Hollywood from the 1940s through the 1960s. She was a natural redhead and was well-known for her fiery yet sensible heroines in Westerns and adventure films. Her star-making potential was first discovered by actor Charles Laughton, who brought her to Hollywood as well as several times she worked alongside director John Ford and longtime friend John Wayne. O'Hara was born in Dublin, Ireland and was raised Catholically. She had aspired since an early age to become an actor. O'Hara began her studies at the Abbey Theatre and Rathmines Theatre Company when she was just 10 years old. After passing a screen test, she was rejected. However, Charles Laughton recognized her potential and offered to have her perform in Alfred Hitchcock's Jamaica Inn in 1939. She moved to Hollywood that same year to be a part of his in the production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame which was then awarded a contract by RKO Pictures. She had a lengthy, highly successful career and was nicknamed "the Queen of Technicolor". In films such as How Green Was My Valley (1941) and her first collaboration, The Black Swan with Tyrone Power (1942), The Spanish Main with Sinbad the Sailor (1947) as well as the classic Christmas film Miracle on 34th Street (1947) together with John Payne (and Natalie Wood), and Comanche Territory (1950), she appeared. O'Hara directed her first film together with John Wayne, the actor who she is closely connected, in Rio Grande (1950). The Quiet Man (1952), The Wings of Eagles(57), McLintock were the next films. (1963), Big Jake (1971). Many assumed that Wayne and O'Hara were in the same relationship or were married due to their close rapport. O'Hara began to assume more mommy roles in the 1960s as she grew older. She appeared in films such as The Deadly Companions (1961), The Parent Trap (611) and The Rare Breed (1966). O'Hara retired from the industry in the year 1971. She returned to the business twenty years later, appearing with John Candy (1991).
